Mario Gotze Joins PSV Eindhoven

Mario Gotze has joined PSV Eindhoven for free on a two-year deal after his contract at Borussia Dortmund ran down. At just 28-years-old, Gotze still has lots to give after achieving so much from a young age.

Gotze scored the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final and has plenty of club level trophies, including five Bundesliga titles. The attacking midfielder can play across the midfield and brings a wealth of experience to the club.

German Arrives on Free Transfer

This will be the first season outside of Germany for the attacking midfielder. Having joined Borussia Dortmund at the age of eight, he has spent twenty years plying his trade in Germany. Indeed, he is supposedly relishing this new challenge after telling the club website: “I feel I am ready for a very different challenge and I am confident that this should be a very comfortable transition for me.”

PSV Eindhoven certainly is a great club with a stage worthy of Gotze’s talents. The club has a record of 21 Eredivisie titles, second only to Ajax’s 26. However, with Gotze they have signed a serial winner and he may just help them bag more titles.

Still up to the Task?

Gotze was hot property on the transfer market some years ago and many are surprised to see him leaving on a free transfer. However, in 2017 the player was diagnosed with a metabolic disorder that negatively impacted his career. After much hard work, this is now behind Gotze as he looks to start anew in the Netherlands.

There are always going to be question marks over the midfielder’s fitness. Although, Gotze made 21 appearances in the 2019/2020 season and will want to defy his critics.

He added: “I kept on training and got myself fit for the new adventure. I am looking forward to joining my new team-mates for full training and preparing myself for the upcoming fixtures.”

Further Additions

Gotze was the second addition of the day after PSV also landed Chelsea midfielder Marco van Ginkel. The 27-year-old has joined from the Premier League side on loan.

It is the fourth season the Dutchman has spent with the club, winning two Eredivisie titles along the way.
