Riley McGree: Birmingham City Sign Attacking Midfielder on Loan

Riley McGree

Birmingham City have signed attacking midfielder Riley McGree on a season-long loan from MLS expansion side Charlotte FC. McGree made the move to Charlotte from Australian side Adelaide United, but the new clubs are not entering the MLS until 2022. Therefore, a loan move for McGree in the meantime means he can keep up his match sharpness.

A Promising Player

McGree is a promising young player who has been capped at U17 and U23 level for Australia. He has also earned his first call-up to the senior squad but is yet to make his full debut for the Socceroos.

In last season’s A-League, McGree scored 13 times in 26 appearances for Adelaide and also netted in their 4-0 FFA Cup win against Melbourne City.

McGree has also played for Newcastle Jets and Melbourne in Australia as well as Belgian side Club Brugge for a short spell.

Something to excite the Birmingham fans is that McGree also won the 2018 FIFA Puskas Award for his stunning scorpion kick while playing for Newcastle against Melbourne.

What Was Said?

Speaking to the club website about his move, McGree said: “It’s a huge opportunity. As an Australian growing up playing football you always dream of coming to England and going onto bigger things so this is a good stepping stone and a good opportunity for me.

“I back my capabilities and I think I’m more than ready to show what I’m about.

“I’m looking forward to it a lot. I’m a bit unprepared and I don’t really know what to expect but that’s the great part of it and I’m excited to get stuck in.”
