Charlton Athletic are interested in signing former Reading defender Chris Gunter, according to Richard Cawley of the South London Press.

The Welsh international has been a free agent since leaving the Royals earlier this summer.

Experienced Defender

Gunter would add a wealth of experience to a Charlton squad who have been hit by a turbulent summer.

The Addicks are without a win in the league since the opening day of the season, losing to Doncaster Rovers and Lincoln City before drawing 0-0 with Sunderland last time out.

Furthermore, Lee Bowyer is currently without a senior right-back in his squad. Both Chris Solly and Adam Matthews left at the end of the last season, and due to their transfer embargo over the summer, youngster Chris Barker has filled in at right-back.

While the 17-year-old has performed superbly so far this season, Bowyer is keen to add defensive reinforcements, and Gunter could be the perfect fit.

Gunter began his career with Cardiff City, before his career lead him to join Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest.

However, it is with Reading where he is best known. The Welshman amassed over 300 appearances during his time with Reading, becoming a club legend in the process.

The 31-year-old joined the Royals on a three-year deal in the summer of 2012 as they embarked on their return to the Premier League. He made 23 appearances during his first season, scoring just once.

Despite their relegation, he continued to impress. He became a mainstay in their defence, making over 45 appearances in each of the next five seasons.

However, he started to lose his place in the starting line-up during his final two years with club. He shared the starting berth with Andy Yiadom, and injuries also kept him out of the line-up.

The Welshman made 314 appearances in total during his time with the Royals, scoring four times.
