Third Manchester City Play to Test Positive

Gundogan is the third Manchester City player to test positive for COVID-19 this month, after both Aymeric Laporte and Riyad Mahrez tested positive on Monday 7 September.

While Mahrez is set to be involved in City’s opening game of the season against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Laporte will miss out after failing to recover in time.

It is not clear how the German contracted the virus, or whether he is showing in symptoms. However, Manchester City have confirmed he will now self-isolate, wishing him well in his recovery.

Gundogan made 50 appearances for Manchester City in all competitions last season, scoring five goals and registering five assists.

Pep Guardiola Look to Begin Title Conquest at Molineux

City will begin their quest to regain the Premier League title at Molineux on Monday night.

However, Pep Guardiola will be without three key players. As well as Laporte and Gundogan, City will be without striker Sergio Aguero.

The Argentine is likely to miss the first two months of the season, according to Guardiola. Aguero sustained a serious knee injury post-lockdown, and the Spaniard knew he would be without his star striker for some time.

“We knew that the injury was difficult,” Guardiola said ahead of the Wolves game.

“He is doing the job, in maybe one month or two months he will be ready.

“He has to come back on the pitch and regain the physical condition.

“Sergio was out for a long time and Sergio is not a guy who regains the physical condition quick so I think in one month or two months he will be ready.”
