REPORT: Liverpool Enquire About Watford Winger Ismaïla Sarr

Sarr

Liverpool have enquired with Watford over their forward Ismaïla Sarr and ‘discussed his situation’ as per a Tweet from the North West football reporter for the Daily Mail Dominic King. No formal offer has been made as of yet but the Reds are believed to be ‘seriously’ considering adding the Senegalese forward as a backup to their first-choice front three.

What Liverpool Would Be Getting

In truth Jurgen Klopp and his side know all too well what they would be getting should they sign Sarr. The 22-year-old was instrumental in Liverpool’s first and arguably worst defeat of an otherwise almost faultless season.

The Senegal international scored twice as the Hornets stung the Reds at Vicarage Road, inflicting a 3-0 defeat on the, at the time, champions-elect. Sarr was also part of the side that caused plenty of headaches for Klopp’s defence earlier in the season at Anfield, although the wide forward did end up on the wrong side that day as Mohamed Salah scored twice.

Why Would Sarr Join?

Despite arriving as a backup to begin with, Sarr would jump at the chance to join Liverpool, having suffered the indignity of relegation with Watford, it’s likely he would jump at most Premier League sides.

However, the Reds have an advantage over most; not only the lure of Champions League football and their obvious recent success but also the fact that Sarr has a compatriot in the Liverpool ranks in Sadio Mane.

Following the fixture at Anfield, Mane was pictured asking Watford captain Troy Deeney to take care of Sarr, signs of a friendship that may be reunited at club level soon enough.

The Deal

King stated that Watford are looking for £36 million-plus to let their star man leave, hardly surprising when you consider they spent £30 million to bring him to the club just over a year ago. Although not renowned for their big spending, Klopp’s squad is almost sure to see an overhaul in the coming weeks with multiple outgoings a possibility, these could well fund the Sarr move.

The Senegal international scored five goals in his debut Premier League season, and could well soon find himself playing understudy to a trio of the best in the business.

Another reputable journalist and the deputy news editor for the Guardian Ed Aarons also commented on the Sarr news on Twitter, saying that ‘Ismaila Sarr’s agent said that he is still waiting for firm offers.’

Much Needed Reinforcement?

Liverpool certainly need striking reinforcements as they prepare to fight on numerous fronts. Sarr would provide ideal cover across the front three and will give the stars a much-needed rest on occasion without too big a drop off in standard.

This news comes on the same day that Klopp seems to have secured the transfer of Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich.
