Ipswich Town midfielder Flynn Downes says he is “hopeful” that he will remain at Portman Road beyond the end of the transfer window.

Town Reject Second Palace Bid

The talented 21-year-old’s impressive performances led to rumours of a move to several Premier League clubs, including Crystal Palace, Arsenal and West Ham United.

Downes, who is contracted to Town until at least 2022, was labelled with a £4 million price tag.

According to Stuart Watson of the East Anglian Daily Times, the Suffolk side have rejected a second bid from Palace.

The Eagles have reportedly lodged a bid of around £2 million for the 21-year-old.

But, having featured in all but seven of the Blues’ League One fixtures last season, the Essex-born midfielder has played down speculation of a move away.

Asked whether he will continue to be a Town player this season, Flynn Downes said: “Yeah, hopefully. We’ll see. You can never say for sure, but hopefully I will be.

“I’ve heard little bits and bobs, but I’m just focussing on the football.

“That’s all I can say really. Everything will be taken care of.”

Midfield Dilemna for Town Boss Paul Lambert

Departures from Portman Road are likely before the start of the season.

Town boss Paul Lambert has already commented on needing a squad of a manageable size.

And with eight players available to play in midfield, that position is likely to receive attention in the next few weeks.

Speaking to BBC Suffolk, Flynn Downes added: “We’ve got a lot of options in midfield. I feel sorry for the gaffer, because he’s got to pick the team.

“Everyone wants each other to do well though and I think that breeds a winning team.”

Lambert currently has Downes, Andre Dozzell, Teddy Bishop, Jon Nolan, Tristan Nydam, Alan Judge, Cole Skuse and Emyr Huws all available to play in midfield.

At 34-years-old, Skuse is unlikely to feature in every fixture this season; the remaining seven players, however, will have to compete for one of three places in Lambert’s preferred 4-3-3 set-up.
