REPORT: Chelsea Close in on Shock Move for Thiago Silva

Having conceded 54 goals in the Premier League last season, it’s clear Chelsea need help defensively. According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, they seem to have found it in 35-year-old Thiago Silva.

Chelsea Close in on Shock Thiago Silva Move

Thiago Silva in Champions League Chase

His future may be up for debate, but at the moment all the Paris-Saint Germain captain has on his mind is the Champions League final – the French side’s first-ever.

Led by superstars Neymar Jr. and Kylian Mbappe, Silva and his squad overcame RB Leipzig in the semi-finals to advance to the final, where they will face the dominant Bayern Munich.

They are the underdogs, but with the talent they have in their ranks anything is possible. Despite that, PSG will back themselves to pull off the upset and win their first Champions League trophy.

Shortly after the end of the campaign, the veteran Brazilian will make his decision on his future, but he’s reportedly leaning towards a switch to Stamford Bridge.

Out of Contract in the Summer

Silva’s contract is up in a few weeks’ time and, unless he agrees a new deal with PSG, he will be available as a free agent. This is where Chelsea are looking to snap him up.

Having spent eight years in Ligue 1, he may be looking for a fresh challenge, and there’s no more attractive destination than the Premier League. Silva would certainly get playing time under Frank Lampard given the club’s defensive woes.

None of the major centre-backs at the club were convincing at all last season, so a reliable defender like Silva could be just what they need to get the Blues backline back on track.

Not only could he bring some much-needed stability and organisation, but he could also mentor the younger defenders, especially rising gem Fikayo Tomori. Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Kurt Zouma also have a lot to learn from the world-class player Silva is.

If Silva chooses Chelsea, and they can get the signing across the line, it will be a tremendous coup for Lampard and his young side. Sometimes the youth need the experience to guide them, and Silva will bring that required blend.
