Goalkeeper Shortage

Doncaster Rovers were short of goalkeepers, with only Louis Jones, 21, available to them.

Having sent Irish goalkeeper Ian Lawlor, 25, to League Two side Oldham Athletic, there was a clear need for one, probably two goalkeepers to arrive at the Keepmoat Stadium this summer.

Josef Bursik becomes the first in that position to arrive at the South-Yorkshire club.

The England U20 international goalkeeper becomes the club’s second recruit of the summer, joining former Crystal Palace winger Jason Lokilo.

Well-Regarded

Bursik is said to be well-regarded at Stoke City and signed a three-and-a-half-year deal in January.

He has featured at U17, U18, U19 & U20 level in the England setup, clearly showing a good level of potential. This is often the case with the players Doncaster sign on loan.

Last season, they did well with the likes of Arsenal‘s Ben Sheaf and Wolverhampton Wanderers‘ pair Cameron John and Niall Ennis. All of whom are likely to be looking toward Championship football in the forthcoming campaign after making the adequate progression.

Jacob Ramsey, of Aston Villa, also enjoyed a fruitful short spell with the club before the season was brought to an early conclusion, after joining in January.

League One Experience

Bursik comes ready-made with League One experience, having spent last season on loan with Accrington Stanley.

He made 20 appearances across League One and the EFL Trophy, conceding 30 goals and keeping five clean sheets. He had waited until the middle of December to make his league debut for the club and had kept his place ever since.

Positive Mood Ahead of 2020/21

Doncaster will be hoping to be in and around the play-off spots once again.

Rovers have started pre-season well, with two high-scoring victories, winning 3-2 against Scunthorpe United and 4-3 against Bradford City.

They will face Manchester United U23s in a friendly on September 1.

The draw for the EFL Trophy has seen them in a group with Bradford City, Oldham Athletic, and Wolves U21.
