REPORT: Edinson Cavani Set to Sign for Benfica

Cavani

After a very up-and-down seven years at Paris Saint-Germain, where the continued string of new signings like Zlatan Ibrahimović and Neymar hampered his playtime, Edinson Cavani is now a free agent and looks set to sign for Portuguese giants Benfica, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Cavani Set to Sign for Benfica

Linked With Many Top Clubs

Ever since it became clear that Cavani’s career at PSG would be coming to an end, he has become a target for many important sides throughout Europe, particularly in January.

As the winter window drew to a close, both Chelsea and Manchester United were desperate to sign a new striker and both came close to signing the Uruguayan, but he decided to stay in France and see out the remainder of his contract.

Chelsea ended up signing no one in January, while United brought in Odion Ighalo from China to be their backup centre-forward. Once Cavani officially became a free agent, he also began to attract interest from other top clubs.

Man United continued their pursuit of the forward, while the Blues signed Timo Werner who is on another level to the ageing Cavani. The most surprising rumour of the lot, however, was the speculation of a move to Leeds United.

However, that has yet to materialize, and he seems to be on his way to Benfica, with an agreement expected within this week.

A Bargain for His Quality

He may be older now, but a prime Cavani was one of the best strikers in Europe, and while he may have lost some of his pace, he will never lose that finishing touch. For that reason, any club that signs him for free will be getting a very good deal.

Leeds surely could’ve used him as they look to navigate the unknown waters of the Premier League, but Benfica will be getting a very talented and experienced player in their fight to reclaim the Primeira Liga title from Porto next year, and maybe make their mark in the Champions League.
