How Sociedad Moved Ahead of Lazio

It had seemed only a matter of time until the City legend made a switch to Italian outfit Lazio. The player’s father even hinted at a move to Serie A, telling the media that Silva enjoys watching Italian football, and could envisage himself playing in Italy until age 40.

However, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Real Sociedad had “hijacked” the deal, leaving Lazio “furious” to have missed out on the player.

The Italian side had agreed on a three-year deal with the player and had scheduled for a medical to take place in Rome.

Real Sociedad made the surprise announcement late on Monday night. The club took to Twitter to announce the signing. Silva joins as a free agent on a contract until June 2022.

Silva to Be Rewarded With Statue Outside Etihad Stadium

Silva achieved legendary status for his achievements during a ten-year spell at Manchester City. The midfielder won four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and five League Cup trophies with the club.

His last appearance for the club came as a late substitute in Saturday’s Champions League defeat by Ligue 1 side Lyon.

Silva made 426 appearances in total for the Citizens, scoring 77 goals and registering 140 assists.

His contribution to the club will see Silva rewarded with a statue at the Etihad stadium. Former club captain Vincent Kompany will also receive a commemoration of some kind.

At international level, the playmaker was part of the Spain squads that won the 2010 World Cup in between European Championship victories in 2008 and 2012.
