REPORT: Chelsea and Manchester City Ready to Battle for David Alaba

David Alaba

Premier League club’s Chelsea and Manchester City are two of many leading clubs keeping tabs on David Alaba. The Bayern Munich defender’s future is unclear, with just one year remaining on his current deal. The Telegraph claims that both the English sides are ready to make a swoop for the Austrian and are closely monitoring his situation with the German champions.

Chelsea and Manchester City Ready To Battle For David Alaba

A Bayern Legend

David Alaba has spent his whole senior career at Bayern Munich. He occupied the left-back role for the majority of his time in Bavaria, however, the emergence of Alphonso Davies forced him elsewhere.

Alaba is a very versatile player, making him an attractive player to buy for any super club. As well as left-back, he can also play as a centre-back, central midfielder, and as a winger.

What makes Alaba such an attractive player to buy is his honours list. His glittering career so far has wielded nine Bundesliga titles, five DFB-Pokal titles and a Champions League trophy. He breeds a winning mentality. His serial trophy-winning habits make him part of one of Bayern’s most successful teams ever and make sure his name is associated with Bayern Munich.

The club would love him to sign a new deal, however, overseas interest may tempt the Austrian into a new challenge.

Premier League Interest

As per the Telegraph, English sides Chelsea and Manchester City are both monitoring Alaba’s situation. They are eager to know whether he will sign a new contract or not before investing time and money into capturing his signature.

Chelsea are keen on signing a left-sided defender to build towards a Premier League title challenge. Marcos Alonso faced tough criticism last season whilst Emerson is rumoured to be returning to Italy. Chelsea’s defence cost them significant amounts of points last season, therefore it is essential they recruit a mature defender. This will help organise their youthful backline. Alaba is a player who fits that box.

Meanwhile, Manchester City are looking to rebuild their backline in their quest to snatch the title back from Liverpool. They have already agreed on a deal with Bournemouth to sign Nathan Ake for £40 million. City are also interested in signing Napoli star Kalidou Koulibaly in addition to Ake. David Alaba would complete a trio of defensive signings for Guardiola, who has worked with the 28-year-old at Bayern. Benjamin Mendy‘s fitness issues are likely the source of City’s interest in Alaba.
