2026 World Cup Third Place Game Prediction: England vs France

England vs France is the 2026 World Cup third place game. England suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the World Cup semifinal and now must bounce back quickly, as their opponent is an elite European rival, France. France had a near perfect tournament until running into Spain and falling 2-0 in the semifinal. Our panelists offer their predictions for the matchup.

England vs France (Saturday July 18th in Miami)

Ben Mapp:  Despite often being viewed as little more than a consolation fixture, this represents a good opportunity for England to claim the sort of statement victory they have struggled to produce against the game’s elite nations. Both sides will still be hurting after their semi-final defeats, but ending the tournament with a win would provide at least some consolation.

Much may depend on whether Didier Deschamps and Thomas Tuchel field their strongest XIs or hand opportunities to players on the fringes of their squads. If France unleash their first-choice attack, spearheaded by Kylian Mbappe, they have more than enough quality to expose the defensive frailties England have shown at times during the tournament.
Equally, Les Bleus have looked vulnerable at the back, which should give England’s dangerous wide players, including Morgan Rogers, Bukayo Saka and Anthony Gordon, opportunities to create chances of their own.
England vs France has all the ingredients of an entertaining contest, with both teams looking to finish the tournament on a positive note. England will certainly create opportunities, but France’s greater quality in the final third should prove decisive in a closely fought encounter.
Prediction: France 2-1 England
Steen Kirby: Thomas Tuchel’s baffling tactics in the second half of the semifinal defeat have introduced a further rift into the England camp. That gives France even more of an advantage heading into this matchup, for a game that many overlook.

Should France opt to rotate some of their XI, their second choice squad also appears stronger with the likes of Desire Doue and Jean-Philippe Mateta as bench forwards. France will be without an injured William Saliba at CB for certain which brings in Maxence Lacroix into the XI. England will miss Reece James.

Tuchel’s squad dynamic for England vs France will be interesting, should he opt for the “best XI” with the likes of Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane, Declan Rice, and Anthony Gordon then this match only has England as a slight underdog. However, this has been a demanding tournament for the Three Lions physically with the game against Norway in Miami, and the trip to Mexico to play at Estadio Azteca among the most physically demanding games of the tournament.

With England defensively brittle at times, France should pull away in the second half. Few teams have been able to limit the French attack for long periods of time.

Prediction: France 3-1
