Former Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam is one of five players to be released by Reading, following the expiry of his contract at the Madejski Stadium.

Who is Leaving Alongside Adam?

Adam has been released by the Royals after just one season with the club.

Having joined from Stoke City last summer, the 34-year-old amassed 27 appearances in total. During his time with the club, he scored just two goals.

Joining the Scotsman in departing the Madejski Stadium is club legend Chris Gunter.

The Welshman – who spent the majority of the last decade with the Royals – was a popular figure in the dressing room and among the fans. He has been a virtual mainstay in the Reading defence throughout his time with the club, making 306 appearances in total.

The Reading website paid tribute to Gunter’s time with the club, describing him as a “model professional” following the announcement of his departure.

Joining Gunter and Adam in leaving Reading are Tyler Blackett, Jordan Obita and Garath McCleary.

Blackett has never cemented his place in the starting 11, despite making over 100 appearances during his four-year spell. A centre-back by trade, the 26-year-old has been used as a left-back by Mark Bowen throughout the majority of this season.

As a result of Blackett’s inclusion at left-back, it has meant Jordan Obita was shifted further up-field. He made just 21 appearances for the Royals this season, as they finished 14th in the Championship.

Garath McCleary is another player who is heralded as a fans’ favourite.

Joining in 2012, the Jamaican made over 250 appearances for the Royals. His energetic performances on the wing saw him register 26 goals in total.

However, he has not made an impression on current manager Mark Bowen. Only two of his 19 league appearances last season were as a starter.
