Norwich City have parted company with young goalkeeper Billy Johnson. The 20-year-old has left Carrow Road after a two-year spell with the club to join Stevenage.

The Boro finished the season bottom of League Two and are set to play in the National League from next season.

The signing of Johnson takes their player recruitment up to five as they prepare for life next season and put their miserable recent campaign behind them.

Player and Manager Delighted Deal is Complete

The official Stevenage FC website confirmed the capture of Johnson earlier on Wednesday. The shot-stopper and his new boss Alex Revell are delighted the deal is done.

“We are really pleased to announce the signing of Billy. He had a brilliant loan last year at Braintree on loan from Norwich and he has a real presence for such a young man and has real quality with his distribution and shot-stopping,” said the Stevenage boss.

“Billy is a fantastic character and knows that he has to come in and work at his best every day to keep improving and earn the right to play. He will be someone that I know will relish that challenge.”

Johnson added: “It feels great. It has been a long time coming but I am glad we could get the deal over the line and I am looking forward to what can come for the future. I can’t wait to get back to it.”

Life at City

Johnson joined Norwich City as an 18-year-old after spending time at the Community Sports Foundation’s (CSF) Football and Education Programme. It was this programme where he was trained by ex-City players. It also allowed him to continue his academic studies. However, he was offered the chance to earn a contract with the Canaries. The youngster signed a one-year deal with an option of a further 12 months.

Johnson failed to make a senior appearance at Norwich but did feature twice in the EFL cup. Two spells on loan at Lowestoft and Braintree Town saw him impress enough to earn a move to Stevenage.
