Derby County Boss Phillip Cocu Slams ‘Beyond the Limits’ Abuse Aimed at Ben Hamer

Under Fire Shot-Stopper

The comments were directed at the shot-stopper who has endured a difficult return to life post-lockdown.

Hamer has come under fire on social media recently after making mistakes against Nottingham Forest and Brentford.

The Rams conceded an early goal against Forest when Joe Lolley’s left-footed strike snuck in at the far post.

Derby snatched a point in second-half stoppage-time when Chris Martin bundled home a late equaliser.

But Hamer was at fault again on Saturday in the 3-1 loss to Brentford.

Jason Knight equalised after Ollie Watkins had opened the scoring; however, Hamer allowed Said Benrahma‘s shot to slide underneath him to restore the Bees’ lead.

Benrahma added another, later on, inflicting a second successive defeat on Cocu’s Derby.

Hamer, who is on-loan from Huddersfield Town, had to delete his Twitter account after the severe abuse.

And Hamer’s boss is not happy with the anger aimed at the ‘keeper.

Cocu told the Derbyshire Telegraph: “Unfortunately, if a goalkeeper makes a mistake it is very likely it will end up as a goal.

“All players make mistakes, but the way people go at him at the moment is beyond the limits, if you ask me.

“The abuse, I think social media now is something that is really part of society.

“You should think, because when you press the button, you cannot get it off. Even if you remove it, it’s still on it. So think before you publish something.

“We have had a few examples in past weeks of people going at players in very bad manners and ways, it is unacceptable.

“I cannot accept fans, our fans or any fans, going at my goalkeeper in that way.”
