Relegation Battle as Huddersfield Town Host Wigan Athletic

Two sides at the wrong end of the Championship table meet this weekend when both Huddersfield Town and Wigan Athletic will look to pick up points to move them clear of the drop.

Battle at the Bottom

Huddersfield find themselves just three points clear of the drop, while Wigan are just two above the bottom three.

Although we can probably discount form given the recent break has been longer than the close season, the Terriers won two of their last five league games before the break. As for the Latics, they were unbeaten in their last five, winning three. As a result, Paul Cook’s side moved out of the bottom three.

Team News

The only injury concern for the Terriers is that defender Tommy Elphick remains sidelined with a long term knee problem. Chey Dunkley is closing in on a return despite a double leg break back in February but will miss the trip.

Karlan Grant leads Town’s scoring charts with 16 goals from 34 appearances, but January loan signings Chris Willock and Emile Smith Rowe have hit the ground running following their arrivals from Arsenal.

For Wigan, defender Dunkley has hit six goals this season, and his defensive power at the back could also be a miss. He is also the clubs’ joint-top goalscorer alongside Kieffer Moore.

Only four sides in the division have a poorer defence than Huddersfield, but Wigan aren’t likely to cause too many problems in front of goal as they have the second-lowest amount of goals scored from the 24 teams.

Head to Head

Unsurprisingly, the two sides played out a 1-1 draw back in December. However, in the last six meetings between the two sides, the Terriers have won three with Wigan winning just once. That win, however, was during the Latics’ last visit to The John Smith’s Stadium.

Prediction: Huddersfield Town 0-0 Wigan Athletic
