Northern Ireland international striker Kyle Lafferty has left League One side Sunderland. Lafferty signed a short-term deal with the Black Cats in January and the 32-year-old went on to score two goals in 11 appearances.

Kyle Lafferty Leaves Sunderland

No Real Impact

Experienced striker Lafferty joined Sunderland on a free transfer to bolster Phil Parkinson’s goal-shy strikeforce. The former Rangers and Norwich City star failed to make his place in the first-team a permanent one as Parkinson kept faith in fellow forward Charlie Wyke.

Lafferty did make a big impression in one game, however. His first start for the club produced two goals as his new side drew 2-2 at home with Gillingham. These would be his only goals in his short stay on Wearside.

Lafferty is the second player to leave the club, with defender Tommy Smith departing due to his short-term deal nearing an end.

Overhaul Expected

Sunderland manager Phil Parkinson is set to put his own stamp on the squad before the new season begins. Parkinson inherited Jack Ross’ squad and, apart from the January transfer window, he has had little chance to make the squad his own.

With many players out of contract this summer, it could give the former Bolton Wanderers manager a chance to build a team which he feels has a better opportunity of gaining promotion.

Kyle Lafferty Unlikely to Return

With the announcement being made via the clubs’ official website, it is unlikely the experienced striker will be returning to the club in the future. The short statement read:

“Sunderland AFC can confirm that Kyle Lafferty has left the club.

“After signing a short-term deal at the Stadium of Light in January, the 32-year-old striker went on to score two goals in 11 appearances for the Lads.

“Everyone at SAFC would like to wish Kyle the best of luck for the future.”
