REPORT: Manchester United Set to Offer Brandon Williams Major New Contract

Brandon Williams

Manchester United are set to reward academy starlet Brandon Williams with a new contract. The left-back has become an integral part of the Red Devils squad, especially due to Luke Shaw‘s recurring injuries in the past year.

Reports from The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell have revealed that the new contract is in the works. It will be cemented once Williams’ position in the first team is solidified.

United have a dual purpose with respect to awarding a new contract to the defender. While the primary purpose is to bind the quality youth player for long-term, the secondary purpose is all about upgrading the Englishman’s pay-scale.

The Reward for His Resilience

Williams currently earns £4,000-per-week and this is far less compared to similarly aged players at the club (Diogo Dalot has a weekly wage of £50,000). But, most importantly, Williams’ competition in the left-back role Luke Shaw earns around £190,000 as part of his current deal.

This is a serious difference as Williams seems to have established himself as a better option than Shaw at that very position.

The full-back had recently signed a new contract in October 2019, but the major intention behind that contract was to secure a place in the squad rather than aiming at a pay-raise.

Williams has reiterated countless times to friends and fans that he is totally focused on becoming a permanent member of the starting 11 at Old Trafford in the long run.

Williams’ United Career to Date

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has often praised Williams for the hunger and attitude shown by the teenager. Clearly, the head-coach believes in the young Englishman and consistency could lead to him becoming one of the best left-backs in the Premier League.

He made a solid debut for United in the Carabao Cup. This was followed by starts in the Europa League as well as the Premier League. This has attracted the attention of England national team boss Gareth Southgate too. The U20 regular will still have to perform at the U21 levels though for a call-up in the future.

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville had also tweeted about the youngster. The United legend appreciated the defender’s attitude and desire to win. He also went on to advise Williams to “keep going” and backs him to become one of the best for the Red Devils in the future.
