REPORT: Chelsea Want Jeremie Boga Sell-On Clause But Will Not Buy Him Back

Just a few weeks ago, Chelsea were considering exercising the modest £13 million buy-back option for Sassuolo winger Jeremie Boga. But now, the Blues have ended that interest according to journalist Fabrizio Romano. And in his piece for The Guardian, he explained that the Blues are negotiating a sell-on clause instead.

Boga Breakout

Boga, 23, has enjoyed a breakout season with Sassuolo this year. In 24 Serie A games, he has hit the back of the net eight times and added four assists for the mid-table club. Thanks to his standout performances, Napoli became even more interested in buying his services.

But the Naples club isn’t the only one with an eye on him. According to an interview in  Calciomercato, via Goal, Boga’s agent, his brother Daniel, confirmed interest from Napoli as well as Atalanta and other unspecified European clubs recently.

His brother also spoke about the speculation of a potential move to AC Milan. “As far as Milan is concerned, I haven’t had any contact with them yet. I don’t know if they are really interested in Jeremie,” he said. “You have to look at what the sporting project will be, but Milan is a great club. It can always be interesting,” he added.

The same Goal article also mentioned possible, although low, interest from Roma and Premier League clubs Everton and Brighton.

Chelsea may no longer be pursuing Boga, who they sold in 2018 for £3.5million, but other clubs certainly are.

Chelsea Cashing In

Because of the growing interest in the Ivory Coast international, Chelsea are looking to cash in. Right now, they are trying to negotiate a sell-on clause with Sassuolo and get a percentage of that transfer fee if and when Boga leaves.

Originally, Chelsea were expected to exercise his buy-back option and then immediately sell him. But at this point, it may just be easier to take a percentage and call it a day.

According to Romano, the front runner right now is Napoli as manager Gennaro Gattuso is an “admirer” of the winger. But even back in January, Boga’s brother spoke about mutual interest from Napoli and the player (CalcioNapoli24 via Goal).

“Boga likes Napoli, they are an important club and is part of his dreams,” he said.

Chelsea find themselves in a good position. Sassuolo can do all the work necessary to sell the rising winger while the Blues kick their feet up and collect a fee, assuming the London club and Sassuolo reach an agreement for said fee.
