Gianluigi Donnarumma Move Would Make Sense for Chelsea

Gianluigi Donnarumma

Chelsea’s manager seemingly lost faith in Kepa Arizzabalaga prior to the season’s postponement. Continuous poor performances, most notably versus Arsenal in December, has led to this. Furthermore, it’s safe to say that Willy Caballero is not in the future starting eleven’s plans.

Enter Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The AC Milan golden boy has emerged as one of the top goalkeepers in football. Yes, not just for his age group, but in all of the sport. The Italian, only 21-years-old, has churned out exemplary performances every weekend for a couple of seasons now. He would be a wise choice to strengthen Lampard’s side.

Donnarumma’s Play

Donnarumma has been Milan’s most consistent player since he entered the first team at the age of 16. His commitment and dedication to winning is clear. He makes the spectacular look normal regularly. The amount of wins and draws he’s secure for his side is also astounding, and it’s safe to say he truly has a clutch gene to his game.

What’s most amazing about this is that he turned 21 in February. Due to his already long tenure at a struggling but large club like Milan, his poise and professionalism is like that of a seasoned veteran. For example, the Italian football world would not bat an eye if Donnarumma was to be named Milan’s captain for whatever reason. That’s saying a lot, as that has been the honour given to the likes of Franco Baresi and Paolo Maldini.

An underrated factor that makes Donnarumma so good is his physical traits. He stands at 1.96 m, and weighs in at nearly 91 kg. He has the size, reach, and athleticism to cover the entire goal.

Furthermore, Donnarumma has defended his goal versus some of football’s elites due to already being a starter for a few seasons now. The list includes the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Paulo Dybala, Romelu Lukaku, Ciro Immobile, Mauro Icardi, and more. There will be no learning or grace period for Donnarumma, as he is ready to step into any situation.

The Price and Fit

Milan are in an interesting situation regarding Donnarumma. He is a product of the youth system and clearly loves the club. With that being said, Milan may be forced to sell this summer in the likely scenario that they once again fail to qualify for Champions League. All signs point to the Italian starlet being sold, as he will produce the highest transfer fee.

In addition, Donnarumma is ready to compete at the highest levels. Milan has a history comparable to any massive club, but this has not been in the case the past decade. With the UEFA Euros and FIFA World Cup around the corner, Donnarumma needs to be playing at the highest level to solidify his place as Italy’s number one option.

With the likelihood that Milan’s hand will be forced to sell and that Donnarumma’s contract expires in 2021, Chelsea may be able to purchase him for a fee anywhere around 40-50 million euros. This would be a bargain for one of football’s best young talents. He is also a goalkeeper that can fit into most teams as a starter for the next decade. If the interest is there, Chelsea must pull the trigger on the move.
