REPORT: Real Madrid Chase Eduardo Camavinga

Real Madrid want to sign 17-year-old Rennes midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, according to reports from Spanish news provider Marca.

The French starlet has impressed in Ligue 1 this season and Zinedine Zidane hopes to move for the teenager this summer

Impressive Form

Camavinga made 36 appearances for Rennes this season before the league was suspended in March due to the spread of coronavirus. In 25 league starts, the 17-year-old scored one goal and made a further two assists.

The Frenchman’s consistency sparked interest from around Europe. Liverpool, Borussia Dortmund, and Paris St Germain remain interested in Camavinga’s progress this season.

But, despite the wide interest, it appears that Real Madrid is the preferred club for the talented Rennes youngster.

Backup Option for Los Blancos

Even though Camavinga forced himself into the starting XI at Rennes this season, he would fall down the pecking order at Madrid.

Los Blancos boss Zidane sees the teenager as a perfect backup option for holding midfielder Casemiro. The former French international has struggled to find a like-for-like replacement within his current squad for Brazilian.

Fede Valverde and Toni Kroos failed to fulfil the holding midfielder duties in Casemiro’s absence this season. Without the 28-year-old Brazilian, Madrid’s performances suffered.

But, the Camavinga would not be a cheap option for Real Madrid as Rennes value the French under-21 international at around £53 million.

Is Camavinga the next N’golo Kanté?

Due to his impressive physicality, intelligent reading of the game and composure, comparisons are being made between the Camavinga and Chelsea star N’Golo Kanté.

Comparisons like this are sometimes dangerous to make for younger players, especially if they fail to live up to the expectation. But there are high hopes for Camavinga. His impressive performances may be enough to earn him a high-profile move to the Santiago Bernabéu this summer.
