Tottenham Hotspur Should Keep Eric Dier at the Club

Eric Dier

Tottenham Hotspur should be looking to keep Eric Dier at the club. The 26-year-old defensive midfielder has struggled for form and fitness recently. He has also fallen out of favour with England coach Gareth Southgate. With his contract set to expire at the end of the 2020/21 season, Dier is another player yet to sign a new deal with the North London club.

Jose Mourinho Should Convince Eric Dier to Remain at Tottenham Hotspur

Plenty to Give

After having his appendix removed, Dier was given medication that laid him low and he struggled to regain match fitness. His match time reduced under previous manager Mauricio Pochettino but he has started to feature more under Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese coveted the player during his reign at Manchester United.

His days as a defensive midfielder may be numbered but the former Sporting Lisbon player can play centre back and solve an issue Spurs have. Toby Alderweireld finally signed a new contract but Jan Vertonghen has failed to agree new terms and has looked in poor form this season. His pace has deserted him and when he was substituted in the FA Cup replay against Southampton, he looked a player lost. Eric Dier is capable of filling that gap and would cost less than a new player; something that would appeal to chairman Daniel Levy.

Levy Keen to Avoid Repeat of Christian Eriksen Departure

Daniel Levy is pushing for Eric Dier to sign a new contract with the club or sell him in the summer. Levy doesn’t want a repeat of the situation that happened with Christian Eriksen where the player could have left Spurs for nothing. Spurs did get just about what they wanted for the Danish midfielder but it was a protracted saga and Levy wants no repeat.

Jose Mourinho can return Eric Dier to his best and back to being the firm fans favourite he quickly became when he joined Tottenham in 2014.
