Swindon Town Sign Midfielder Matt Palmer

The Deal

Swindon announced via their website they had signed the midfielder. Palmer arrives on a free transfer, signing an 18-month contract at the County Ground.

He is not eligible for tomorrow’s top of the table clash with Exeter City, but is expected to be in the stands to watch the game.

Born in Derby, he grew up as part of the Rams’ academy before being released in 2012. From there, he joined Burton Albion where he made his way into the first team, making his debut a year into his time there.

The 2013/14 season was where he made his first meaningful impact on the club. He played 40 league games as Albion made it to the League Two play-off final. The Brewers lost at Wembley to Fleetwood Town with a young Palmer coming off the bench in the 78th minute.

A year later and Palmer was an essential part of Burton’s League Two title, playing 33 games and contributing four goals from midfield under Jimmy Floyd-Hasselbaink.

With Burton already in their highest ever league position, Nigel Clough took over with Palmer heading to Oldham on loan where he completed the 2015/16 season.

Back in favour the following year, Palmer helped the Brewers stay in the Championship in their first ever season in the division, securing second-division status in April with a 1-1 draw against Barnsley.

After relegation the following year, Palmer joined Rotherham in League One in January. At the first time of asking, with Palmer featuring throughout the second half of the campaign, the Millers were promoted back to the Championship. Palmer starred in a 14-match unbeaten run that saw the Yorkshire side fly up the League One table.

The 24-year-old started at Wembley in the play-off Final. He played the full 90 minutes as they overcame Shrewsbury Town to make it back to the Championship.

After playing ten times in the Championship for Rotherham in the 2018/19 season, Palmer was loaned to Bradford City at the start of the season with Rotherham having the option of a recall in January. They exercised the option in early January.
