New Contract and a Loan

Despite loaning him out, it appears Everton see a future for Gibson at the club. The defender has signed a new two-and-a-half-year deal with the Premier League outfit, as well as joining League One Fleetwood for the remainder of the season.

Gibson is yet to make a senior appearance for the Toffees since joining from Newcastle United in 2017, but his good performances for the England youth set-up have been rewarded with a move.

The 19-year-old has represented his country at U17, U18 and U20 level.

What Was Said

Speaking to the club website, Fleetwood head coach Joey Barton said: “Lewis is a player that we have been tracking for a while and we are really pleased to see him join us until the end of the season.

“He’s left-footed, big, strong and will be a superb addition to our squad. We anticipate that he will make a real impact in our team from now until the end of the season.”

In his first interview with the club, Gibson said: “I feel like the way the club acted about it, they were persistent, they wanted to bring me here, it kind of goes a long way for me. To realise how much they wanted me, for me to come here was an easy decision.”

Helping to Consolidate

Fleetwood are having another steady season in League One, currently sitting 11th in the table. However, they are without a win in their last five games, with four of those matches being draws.

Gibson will be hopeful that he can shore up the defence enough so that goals scored at the other end prove to be match-winning rather than match-saving.
