Loan Deal
McGeehan signed a new contract until 2021 last summer; however, the Tykes are looking to give the 24-year-old more playing time away from Oakwell.
The talented midfielder made 44 appearances as Barnsley were promoted from League One last season.
This season he has found opportunities limited; he has not started a Championship fixture since early November and has only made 14 appearances.
McGeehan began his career at Norwich before permanently signing for Luton in 2015; he went on to make more than 100 appearances and score 31 goals during various spells at Kenilworth Road.
Pompey boss Kenny Jackett said: “We’re delighted to sign Cameron. He’s still young, but has a lot of experience.
“He enjoyed a really successful season with Barnsley last year and so we’re really pleased to add him to our midfield.”
McGeehan, meanwhile, added that the Blues’ push for promotion was an attractive prospect when moving to Fratton Park.
He added: “I wouldn’t be coming here if I didn’t think we could get promoted and it’s still really tight at the top of the table.
“I’m sure everyone would like us to be a bit higher up, but we’re in a good position to go on a run in the second half of the season.
“I was part of a Barnsley side that did exactly that to win promotion last year and hope that will be replicated here.
“Pompey have been a bit of a sleeping giant for a number of years now and need to get up to at least the Championship – I’m here to help them do that.
“I spoke to Kenny quite a few times and he was keen to get me in, while I want to be playing and this is a massive club.”
