Tottenham Hotspur Should Cash in on Jan Vertonghen Amidst Napoli and Ajax Interest

Jan Vertonghen is available on a free transfer in the summer of 2020 and it is now time for Tottenham to cash in with Napoli and Ajax interested.
Jan Vertonghen

Jan Vertonghen has been a mainstay of the Tottenham Hotspur defence since he joined from Ajax in 2012. The Belgian international’s contract is up in the summer and former club Ajax and Napoli have both been linked with the player (Belfast Telegraph).

Jan Vertonghen Transfer Rumour – Tottenham Should Cash in Now

Tottenham Hotspur must cash in in January. Whilst he has been a great servant, his pace has gone and he has become increasingly error-prone. Losing him in the summer for nothing would be financial madness when teams are ready to offer money for him now.

Compatriot Toby Alderweireld has signed a new contract after much dithering. And so o getting a decent price now makes sound business sense. To lose a player for nothing when Tottenham need as much revenue as possible cannot make sense to anyone, especially notorious wheeler-dealer, Daniel Levy.

Napoli and Ajax Look to Bring in Jan Vertonghen

Napoli are resigned to losing Kalidou Kalibouly in the summer. Furthermore, they see Vertonghen as a direct replacement. Tottenham have been linked with the Napoli player themselves and a swap deal and cash would suit both clubs.

Ajax are also interested in bringing Vertonghen back to them, although his wage demands may be a stumbling block according to Sky Sports (via The Sun).

Both Napoli and Ajax play in leagues where the pace is slower than in the Premier League. This would suit the defender as he enters the final few years of his playing career. The pace of the Premier League has led to numerous errors from the Belgian and his departure could open up opportunities for the likes of Juan Foyth and highly rated Japhet Tanganga.

Time to Part on Good Terms

It is a good time for Jan Vertonghen to depart Tottenham Hotspur. Despite winning no trophies with the club, he has been an instrumental part of Spurs consistent top four and Champion’s League football.

For club and player, it has to be time to move on.
