Sky Bet League One side Ipswich Town have shown “tentative” interest in Bristol City midfielder Sammie Szmodics.

Paul Lambert is keeping close tabs on Bristol City midfielder Sammie Szmodics, according to Andy Warren of the East Anglian Daily Times.
Szmodics left Town’s fellow East Anglian-based side Colchester United in the summer.
The 24-year-old moved to Bristol City from the U’s for an undisclosed compensation fee in the summer.
The attacking midfielder has struggled for regular football though, making just two starts for the Robins in all competitions.
Paul Lambert’s side are understood to have “tentatively” made their interest known; other clubs in League One have also registered their interest according to Warren’s report.
It is unknown whether City boss Lee Johnson would prefer Szmodics to depart temporarily to the second or third tier.
Speaking about any impending transfer business in January, boss Lambert said: “You’re always wanting to add, you always do.
“If one or two guys go, you maybe need to try and replace them. Whether the money is there I’m not so sure.
“As I said the other day, I wouldn’t expect to be able to say we’re going to spend x amount of money. We don’t have it.
“If we sell one of the guys would that help? Probably. The club only has one investor, where does it stop?
“It’s impossible to have that investment year in and year out. It’s got to stop somewhere.”
Szmodics, who can play as a central attacking midfielder or as a wide striker, scored 40 goals in 162 games for Colchester.
Competitive Championship Interest
Town will face stiff competition from Championship outfits if they wish to gain the midfielder’s services.
Danny Cowley’s Huddersfield Town are reportedly keen on Szmodics, while Hull City have also been linked.
If Johnson permits Szmodics to depart on loan, it’s more likely a Championship move would come to fruition.
It would allow the former U’s man to play regularly and hit the ground running when returning to Ashton Gate this summer.
