Neil Harris Appointed Manager of Cardiff City

Cardiff City have confirmed that former Millwall boss Neil Harris has taken over at the club. Harris was sacked by the Lions in October, while Cardiff parted company with Neil Warnock last week.

Shrewd Appointment?

Harris’ appointment could be a shrewd one by Cardiff. He worked wonders on a tight budget at Millwall, keeping them in the Championship after promotion from League One in his second season. He also reached the play-off final with the club in his first campaign.

The FA Cup also proved to be a good area of success for Millwall under Neil Harris. They reached the quarter-finals twice under his stewardship, in 2017 and 2019.

This season, though, wasn’t proving to be quite as successful for Harris and Millwall. They were on a seven-match winless run at the time of his departure, which had left the side just five points above the relegation zone in the Championship.

Cardiff aren’t doing too well themselves, though, after their relegation from the Premier League in the 2018/19 campaign. They sit 14th in the second-tier amongst the current mid-table contingent. While they are only eight points above the relegation zone, they are also just seven points shy of the play-off spots.

What Was Said

Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan said of the appointment: “I am pleased to appoint Neil as first-team manager of the club.

“I have full confidence in Neil due to his principles on and off the pitch and enthusiasm to succeed. I am glad to offer him this opportunity and look forward to seeing what he is capable of achieving with Cardiff City.”
