Oxford United Ready for Carabao Cup Clash Against Peterborough United

Carabao Cup

Oxford United will be looking to secure back to back wins against Peterborough United as the Posh return to the Kassam Stadium for the first round of the Carabao Cup.

Following their opening day draw at Sunderland, the U’s secured a 1-0 victory on Saturday against tonight’s opponents, who themselves have lost their first two league games for the first time since 2012.

U’s Looking For Second Successive Victory

It was a dominant display on Saturday as Karl Robinson’s side swept away the Posh in their League One encounter. Cameron Brannagan scored the game’s only goal 12 minutes in, but the hosts put in a strong performance, as they did at Sunderland.

It could have been a tricky start to the season for the U’s but they’ve already picked up four points against two sides that are tipped for promotion.

Although Oxford have lost a couple of key players, the recruitment this summer at the Kassam Stadium has been terrific. Despite a slow start to the window, Robinson has added seven new faces, with four arriving in the last few weeks. Dan Agyei is the latest, unveiled prior to kick off on Saturday following his arrival from Burnley.

Cup Competition

The U’s made it to the third round last season, beating Coventry City and Newport County without conceding a goal, but were knocked out in the third round by eventual winners Manchester City.

Oxford, who won this competition in 1986, have had relatively decent cup runs in recent years and Robinson will be hoping to progress past the first round once again.

Peterborough meanwhile were eliminated at the first hurdle after defeat at Queens Park Rangers, and haven’t made it to the third round since the 2013/14 season.

Squad rotation is likely in this game. Posh have lost their opening two games, so there could be some fresh faces for this clash, while the U’s now have some depth in their squad. Agyei could make his debut, whilst Elliott Moore could be set for his first start. With another tricky league fixture this weekend, Robinson could rotate his team.
