Carabao Cup Second Round Draw

Carabao Cup second round

After nine ties from the first round of the Carabao Cup went to penalties, teams finally know who they will be facing in the second round. Thirteen Premier League side have now entered the fray, as well as Cardiff City and Fulham, who were given a bye following their relegation from the top flight last season.

Carabao Cup Second Round

Key Ties

Southern Section – Newport County v West Ham United

Newport County made all the headlines last year with their astonishing cup runs, and they’ll have the chance to do it again this season as they host West Ham United at Rodney Parade.

The Exiles got to the second round courtesy of a penalty shoot-out victory against Gillingham, but they came so close to not having this glamour tie. Padraig Amond, so often the hero last season, scored a 94th-minute penalty to pull it back to a draw, just three minutes after the Gills thought they had won it through Mikael Ndjoli.

Tristan Abrahams scored the winning goal from the spot to seal the 4-1 win on penalties and set up the game against Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

Northern Section – Nottingham Forest v Derby County

The second round draw has thrown up an East Midlands Derby as a reward for both sides’ successes in the first round.

Forest were narrow 1-0 winners at home to Fleetwood Town courtesy of Tiago Silva’s goal, while Derby were winners by the same scoreline away at League Two side Scunthorpe United.

The two regularly battle against each other in the Championship, but a game with a cup atmosphere under the lights at the City Ground will certainly make this a special edition of the fixture.
