Bayern Munich Sign Ivan Perisic from Inter Milan

Ivan Perisic

Bayern Munich have signed Ivan Perisic from Inter Milan on a one-year loan with an option to buy. After Leroy Sane‘s anterior cruciate ligament injury in Manchester City’s Community Shield win over Liverpool, Bayern Munich had their summer transfer plans thrown into disarray. The Bavarians desperately need some depth in attack, particularly out wide. And they have found just that in Ivan Perisic, though this deal might be a bit confusing to some.

The Leroy Sane Conundrum

Bayern Munich made perfectly clear from the beginning their plans in the summer transfer market. The German giants went all-in on Manchester City winger Leroy Sane. Right as they were ready to receive the fruits of their labour, Bayern were hit with the most devastating news. Sane damaged his ACL in City’s Community Shield tie against Liverpool and will have to undergo surgery.

Nobody is sure yet whether or not Bayern will still try to secure Sane this summer. However, it is entirely evident that the Bavarians need to find other options for the wing.

In Ivan Perisic, Bayern have taken a step to rectify an issue that has long been evident. The 30-year-old will not completely fill the massive void left behind by Bayern’s failure to sign Sane, but he will at least offer the club a versatile depth option in attack.

Niko Kovac’s Choice

Perisic was not only wanted by Die Roten because of his versatility, but he was also reportedly a specific target of coach Niko Kovac. According to Bild, the Croatian is a fan of his compatriot’s hard-working nature and determination.

What he lacks in sheer speed and technical skill, Perisic will make up for in tenacity. That is not to say the former Wolfsburg forward does not have anything else to offer Bayern, though. Perisic is an excellent wide playmaker, and he is more than capable of adding some much-needed firepower up front. In fact, the 30-year-old should have his sights set on scoring at least 10 goals in his first season in Munich.

Perisic will most often feature on the left flank, but he can also serve as a backup to Robert Lewandowski at centre-forward in a pinch.

Not Enough

Ivan Perisic is a great player and will add some significant depth to Bayern’s attack for a cheap price. However, the Croatian alone is not enough. Bayern Munich still need to add at least one more player to their offensive force.

Even if they sign Leroy Sane, another winger would not go amiss. Timo Werner would be a fantastic addition to the club, while players such as Hakim Ziyech, Steven Bergwijn, and Leon Bailey would also make for solid additions.

Regardless of who it is they sign, Bayern Munich cannot end their summer business with Ivan Perisic. Additions are needed that will improve them for both the 2019/20 season and for seasons to come.
