Crystal Palace have confirmed the signing of former Chelsea defender Gary Cahill on a free transfer. The 33-year-old has signed a two-year deal at Selhurst Park.

Chelsea Career

The England international is best known for his eight-year spell with Chelsea. Cahill made close to 200 appearances for the Blues and won nine trophies during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Having joined midway through the season, Cahill was part of the squad that won the Champions League during the 2011/12 season. He made just 15 appearances for Chelsea that season, scoring just one goal.

Cahill formed an instrumental partnership with Chelsea legend John Terry during his time at Stamford Bridge. They won the Premier League during Terry’s final season at Stamford Bridge as well as triumphing in the league two years prior.

However, during his last season at Chelsea he struggled for appearances as Maurizio Sarri opted for fresh faces. As a result, he made just six appearances in all competitions last season.

How Will Gary Cahill Fit In At Crystal Palace?

Due to his age, it is likely that Roy Hodgson will see Cahill as a squad player this season at Selhurst Park. However, he may see regular opportunities should injuries occur. His experience has been favoured over a young signing or academy product.

James Tomkins and Mamadou Sakho are the current first-choice central defender for Crystal Palace. However, there is uncertainty as to whether they will be fit to start the opening day clash against Everton.

As a result, it leaves just Scott Dann and Martin Kelly as the only other senior options. The former may look to leave Selhurst Park should Cahill sign, while the latter may have to cover at right-back should they fail to make further additions.

Cahill is the third signing of the summer for Roy Hodgson, alongside Stephen Henderson and Jordan Ayew.
