Granit Xhaka Signs New Arsenal Contract

Granit Xhaka

Arsenal’s busy summer continues as they tie down Granit Xhaka to a new deal. With Jack Wilshere free to leave the club next month and Aaron Ramsey’s contract set to expire in 2019, the new contract for Xhaka is a very prudent move.

The deal is described as long-term, but Arsenal have not confirmed the exact length.

Granit Xhaka Gets New Arsenal Contract

The Swiss international will represent his country at this summer’s World Cup after playing in all 38 Premier League matches for the Gunners last season. In all competitions, Granit Xhaka has 94 Arsenal appearances in his two seasons in north London.

He joined the club from Borussia Mönchengladbach in the summer of 2016, winning the FA Cup in his first year with the Gunners.

New Arsenal Head Coach Unai Emery had this to say,

“I’m delighted that Granit has extended his contract with us. He’s an important member of the squad and is still young so will be able to develop even more. I hope he has a successful World Cup with Switzerland and comes back fit and ready for the new season.”

Constant Among Questions

With the futures of both Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey in doubt, the re-signing of Granit Xhaka is a prudent move. Arsenal will avoid the possibility of entering next season short-handed at the position.

Additionally, the player is among the best passers at Arsenal, completing 86.9% of his attempts last season. Xhaka’s fitness is also among the best at the Emirates, playing 3,266 minutes to Ramsey’s 1,848 and Wilshere’s 1,188.

The new contract will ensure at least one constant in a midfield oft-criticised for a certain lack of consistency.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are reportedly in advanced talks to bring Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira to the club. While nothing is set in stone, this may be a signal of a changing of the guard in north London.
