Thomas Tuchel Named Paris Saint-Germain Manager

Following weeks of speculation, Paris Saint-Germain have a new manager. Thomas Tuchel, former Borussia Dortmund and Mainz coach, will succeed Unai Emery at the Parc des Princes.

While Emery led the Parisians to a domestic treble, his contract was not renewed. The Spaniard’s failure to advance beyond the Champions League round of 16 during both seasons at the helm is thought to be the primary reason behind the decision.

Thomas Tuchel Confirmed as Paris Saint-Germain Manager

Tuchel’s last appointment came at Borussia Dortmund, replacing Jürgen Klopp, where he won the German Cup in 2017. However, despite this success, the club and manager parted ways by mutual consent after clashing over transfer dealings.

The German manager’s previous appointment was at Mainz in 2009, also replacing Klopp. Somewhat ominously, Tuchel’s time at the club also ended amid disagreements with the board over transfers.

PSG and Thomas Tuchel agreed on a two-year deal on Monday. After officially signing his new contract, the manager had this to say,

“It is with great joy, pride and ambition that I join this great world football club that is Paris Saint-Germain. I look forward to working with all these great players, all of whom are among the best on the planet. With my staff, we will do everything to help the team push their limits to the highest international level.

“There is extraordinary potential in Paris and this is the most exciting challenge that has come to me. I am also looking forward to discovering Parc des Princes, a legendary European football stadium with a fantastic atmosphere.”

Tuchel was on the shortlist of many top clubs seeking new managers this summer, including Bayern Munich. Another possible destination was Arsenal, who are losing manager Arsène Wenger after 22 years in charge.

Other possible vacancies include Chelsea, where Antonio Conte’s future is in doubt, as well as Real Madrid. However, these clubs will need to look elsewhere, as Thomas Tuchel has signed for PSG.
