Bundesliga Matchweek 19: Sunday Review

The final day of action in the Matchweek 19 of the Bundesliga saw Eintracht Frankfurt move up to third in the league and Augsburg won a thriller at the very last. Here’s a recap of Sunday’s action in the German top flight.

FC Augsburg vs. Werder Bremen

Raúl Bobadilla’s 94th minute winner was the difference in this match, as Augsburg claimed all three points in a 3-2 win. The Bavarian club have won two matches in a row, and are back into the top half of the table.

The match was a back-and-forth affair with Augsburg responding promptly to every Bremen goal. Theodor Gebre Selassie put the away side in front in the 26th minute and Jonathan Schmid equalised two minutes later when he blasted in a shot from close range.

In the second half, Max Kruse converted from the spot to once again put Bremen ahead. Less than 15 minutes later, Augsburg were back on level terms as Koo Ja-Cheol finished a well-placed cross. Bobadilla’s goal at the very last was a testament to the poor defence that has contributed to Werder Bremen’s struggles this season.

Having only scored six home goals all season going into this match, the result would have been even more satisfying for Augsburg. Despite the loss, Bremen scored their 3,000th Bundesliga goal, becoming only the second club to reach that landmark. Additionally, they continued their streak of scoring in 18 consecutive matches.

Eintracht Frankfurt vs. Darmstadt

Frankfurt took hold of third place in the table after their 2-0 victory over Darmstadt. The home side saw both their goals come late in the match. Makoto Hasebe scored from the spot in the 74th minute and Ante Rebic scored less than ten minutes later to record his first ever Bundesliga goal.

Darmstadt are in real trouble as their winless streak extends to 11 matches. Their next two matches won’t get easier, as they will face Dortmund and Hoffenheim in the coming weeks. Frankfurt’s win allowed them to avoid a season sweep by Darmstadt, the previous meeting was a 2-0 victory for the lowly club.
