Earlier this off-season, Omar Vizquel was a candidate to fill the Detroit Tigers managerial vacancy before the Tigers hired Ron Gardenhire.

Vizquel will instead be returning to the Chicago White Sox organization for the first time since 2011. This time he will be the manager of the White Sox Class-A affiliate, Winston-Salem Dash, beginning in the 2018 season.

Chicago White Sox Hire Omar Vizquel as Single-A Manager

The all-star shortstop was interviewed for the managerial position for the Tigers but was not chosen. This will be the first time Vizquel will be working as a manager.

Previously, Vizquel coached for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2013 and had the position of being the co-infield coach alongside Bobby Knoop, and replaced Dick Schofield. On November 18, 2013, the Tigers named Vizquel their new first-base coach, replacing Rafael Belliard. Along with being the first-base coach, Vizquel was also the infield and baserunning instructor.

Vizquel is now 50 years old and has been retired from baseball as a player since 2012. The switch-hitting shortstop last played with the Toronto Blue Jays.

With Vizquel starting his managerial career with a Single-A team, you can expect him to learn his craft while managing Winston-Salem and in due time to become a manager in the major leagues.

Career

Vizquel made his debut on April 3, 1989, with the Seattle Mariners. The All-Star shortstop played in 24 major league seasons, was an 11-time Gold Glove winner, and 3-time All-Star.

In Vizquel’s career, he played in 2,968 games, batted .272/.336/.352, had 456 doubles, 77 triples, hit 80 homers, drove in 951 runs, had 404 stolen bases, drew 1,028 walks, and struck out 1,087.

Vizquel played 11 seasons with the Cleveland Indians, five seasons with the Seattle Mariners, four seasons with the San Francisco Giants, two seasons with the Chicago White Sox, one season with the Texas Rangers, and one season with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Vizquel is one of the few players in baseball to hit a home run in four different decades. Vizquel joined the likes of Ted Williams, Willie McCovey, and Rickey Henderson on that list.
