The Philadelphia Phillies trade rumors continue to heat up as Major League Baseball is heading towards the deadline. August 3 is not too far away, and several teams are considering the last opportunity to trade. Philadelphia is not expected to wait until the last minute after already eying potential targets to bolster its outfield depth.
Adolis Garcia‘s injury put the team in a tough spot. García is out for the rest of the season, and the Phillies need a valuable player to take his spot. While they might have other options lined up, it’s not just the outfield that matters. The club needs a player who could give the team an offensive boost as well.
There are multiple trade targets for the team, but Phillies trade rumors are particularly swirling around two sluggers. MLB insider Bob Nightengale opened up on the team’s recent interest in one of his latest columns for USA Today. Nightengale thinks the Phillies will go after two outfielders, but one player stands a better chance.
Phillies Trade Rumors: Team Linked to Lourdes Gurriel Jr. And Jo Adell
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was the first outfielder that Nightengale mentioned as a possible target. Gurriel’s stint with the Arizona Diamondbacks has been nothing but a disaster. Yet, it might come as a surprise to learn that Philadelphia is considered a destination for Gurriel.
“The Phillies have included Diamondbacks left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. among their possible trade targets for a right-handed hitting outfielder, which also includes Angels right fielder Jo Adell,” Nightengale wrote as per USA Today.
Gurriel is slashing .211 at the plate with a .259 OBP and .551 OPS. He has only two home runs in 171 plate appearances. When compared to Jo Adell, Gurriel seems to have a slim chance of making the Phillies’ roster.
Why Does Jo Adell Have a Better Chance With the Phillies
Adell’s numbers are way better than Gurriel’s. The Phillies need someone who will contribute on both ends. Adell is slashing .245 with a .291 OBP and a .686 OPS. Despite the Los Angeles Angels struggling to make ends meet, Adell has been a bright spot with 13 home runs.
The latest Phillies trade rumors have already involved a few of their top prospects. The Angels would consider what the Phillies have in return for Adell, who signed a one-year, $5.2 million deal to avoid salary arbitration. The Phillies have the means to strike a deal with the Angels. They certainly need another outfielder who’s also good at the plate. It’s also worth noting that the Phillies have been eyeing Adell for more than a month.
The Phillies are “desperately looking” for an outfielder ahead of the trade deadline.

While looking at the latest Phillies trade rumors, they are one of those big-market teams waiting for the right deal. The Phillies’ President of Baseball Operations, Dave Dombrowski, is capable of getting them what they need.
Nightengale also mentioned that they could use another starting pitcher alongside Cristopher Sánchez, Zack Wheeler, and Jesús Luzardo. The National League remains competitive, with the Los Angeles Dodgers leading the charge. The postseason will not be easy, as the Phillies must get past the Dodgers (and other teams) one way or another.
The Phillies are just two games behind the Atlanta Braves in the NL East and are second in the NL Wild Card race. The biggest challenge will be the playoffs. Without another strong bat and a pitcher to help the starting rotation, winning the World Series could be hard.
The focus has now shifted to the All-Star Game with two of the team’s best hitters, Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber, coming off last night’s Home Run Derby.
