A Philadelphia Phillies outfielder lands on the 60-day injured list as Adolis García has a right latissimus dorsi tear. The Phillies have recalled Gabriel Rincones Jr. from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to replace García on the 26-man roster. Additionally Derek Hill has joined the team after being acquired for prospects in a trade with the Chicago White Sox on June 11. Steward Berroa has been placed on the paternity list in the corresponding move. Matt Gelb and Charlotte Varnes of The Athletics have reported that Hill and Rincones will likely platoon in right field.
Rincones has a .215/.344/.291 line with one home run and nine RBI in 22 minor league games this season. To add to that Rincones has a 80 wRC+ along with a .276 BABIP and a 0.76 BB/K rate. Rincones turned heads during spring training in 2025 as well. Meanwhile Hill has a .2113/.284/.375 line with four home runs and eight RBI in 50 major league games this year. In addition to that Hill has a 84 wRC+ as well as a .277 BABIP and a 0.24 BB/K rate. Hill has experience at all three outfield spots while Rincones has played both corner outfield positions.

An Idea To Consider For The Time Being
The Phillies outfield test with Edmundo Sosa getting routine work in left field really comes into play now. While it seems the plan is to platoon Hill and Rincones, Sosa should get occasional starts in left field with Brandon Marsh in right field. Sosa has a .202/.236/.333 line with three home runs and 17 RBI in 37 games this season. To add Sosa has a 53 wRC+ and a .233 BABIP along with a 0.12 BB/K rate. Notably Sosa has a .782 OPS and a 113 wRC+ against left-handed pitchers in his career compared to Hill who has a .780 OPS and a 115 wRC+ against left-handed pitchers. They should get creative as Phillies outfielder lands on the injured list.
Other Immediate Roster Implications
The Phillies bench carousel will look different after Berroa returns from the paternity list. Either Berroa will be optioned or the Phillies will go down to two catchers. Garrett Stubbs and Rafael Marchán are both currently on the 26-man roster. Neither Stubbs nor Marchán can be optioned to the minor leagues without first being designated for assignment and clearing waivers. Given the Phillies seem intent to carry three catchers, Berroa likely ends up back in Triple-A after his stint on the paternity list. This is in part because Stubbs can play outfield if needed. Stubbs has made a start in left field this season. As a Phillies outfielder lands on the injured list extra depth is useful.
Trade Deadline Plans May Be Altered
Between this injury and Johan Rojas being out for the season between a suspension and an injury the Phillies need outfield depth. That is part of why they went out and got Hill. As a Phillies outfielder lands on the injured list increasing the outfield depth the team has is essential. Hill does not have minor league options which could come into play later in the season. Brandon Marsh playing at an all-star level has helped the outfield. There is not a need for all three outfield spots to change hands. When García is expected to return will also dictate things. If García is unable to return this season that could lead to a more large scale trade.
