Universal Championship, Two Other WrestleMania 37 Matches Made Official on SmackDown

Roman Reigns Edge Daniel Bryan WrestleMania 37

We’re well on the Road to WrestleMania and this week, WWE took a huge step in filling out the two-night card. On Monday’s RAW, WWE made official the matches between Shane McMahon and Braun Strowman, The Fiend and Randy Orton, Rhea Ripley and Asuka for the RAW Women’s Championship, and Bad Bunny‘s in-ring debut against The Miz. On Friday, SmackDown added to their half of the card as well, confirming two WrestleMania 37 matches as both Seth Rollins and Kevin Owens issued challenges to their respective opponents, Cesaro and Sami Zayn, and Daniel Bryan found himself added to the Universal Championship match.

Cesaro vs. Seth Rollins

Seth Rollins is a bitter man who seems to hold grudges. Still ranting about how Cesaro embarrassed him when he swung him 22 rotations a few weeks ago, Rollins faced Shinsuke Nakamura in a rematch of Fastlane. Rollins won and proceeded to beat Nakamura down but Nakamura’s former partner was there to make the save. Cesaro arrived on the scene, but right before he could swing Rollins again, the Messiah rolled out of the ring to safety. Although, safety was only temporary. Backstage, after Rollins announced his challenge to Cesaro and added that he would never be swung again, the Swiss Superman showed up and pushed his opponent into a set of production crates before swinging him backstage. Cesaro accepted the challenge, marking what will be his first-ever WrestleMania singles match and one of the biggest matches overall in his career. A win for Cesaro on the grandest stage of them all will no doubt set him up for success in 2021 and beyond.

Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn

The “Fight Forever” chant may as well have been created with Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens in mind. Last week, Zayn frustratingly attacked his former friend and rival when Owens forced the man to face the honest truth about his conspiracy theories. This week, Owens hosted Zayn on the KO Show. He wasn’t looking for an apology, much as Zayn tried to give one. He wasn’t looking for a role in the documentary, much as Zayn offered. No, all Owens cared about was a WrestleMania match, and when Zayn accepted the challenge, KO went right to work attacking the man he’s spent much of his career attacking. In fact, ever since Owens’ first night in NXT, he’s had Zayn in his sights either as an enemy or ally. With Owens serving as the good guy this time around, it will be interesting to see how the new dynamic impacts this one of several WrestleMania 37 matches; a match that marks Zayn and Owens’ first-ever WrestleMania singles encounter.

Daniel Bryan vs. Roman Reigns vs. Edge

Roman Reigns’ Road to WrestleMania has been anything but straightforward. Neither has that of his challenger or now, challengers. Edge returned to the ring in this year’s Royal Rumble and went from first to last to book his trip to the main event of WrestleMania. Edge had a choice to make and three champions to choose who to do against. Ultimately and unsurprisingly, Edge chose to face Reigns, but not before Daniel Bryan inserted himself into the picture. Bryan won the Elimination Chamber and with it, the right to face Reigns for the title later that night. With the odds against him, Bryan lost, but he wasn’t done. Not by a long shot.

Bryan worked his way back to a title match with Reigns at Fastlane, where Edge was the special enforcer. With Bryan tapping Reigns for the first time in his career, Edge enforced the outcome he wanted, hitting Bryan with a chair and forcing him to break the hold. Reigns ended up winning the match, but once again, Bryan wasn’t done. Much to Edge’s displeasure, Bryan staged a sit-in to start SmackDown and announced his intention of a rematch. Bryan posed a few options and, at the end of the night, Adam Pearce took him up on the most compelling one: Reigns vs. Bryan vs. Edge at WrestleMania 37. This is set to be one of the most exciting WrestleMania 37 matches announced.
