On a historic night on AEW Dynamite, a very special episode celebrating 30 Years of Chris Jericho, we saw one of the most violent matches return. In this Dog Collar Match, the returning Cody took on the leader of The Dark Order, The Exalted One, Mr. Brodie Lee, for the TNT Championship.
As expected, the match itself delivered the brutality it historically has brought. In the end, one man walked out and that was Cody. After the match, Cody delivered an emotional speech to the fans in attendance at Daily’s Place. He said that he could have chosen the dark side if he wanted, but chose to stand by and with the fans.
Your champion @ThisBrodieLee takes full advantage of the chain!

The last time these two competitors faced each other was back on August, 13th, 2020. On this night, Brodie Lee defeated Cody for the TNT Title in just over three minutes. The Exalted One, along with The Dark Order would then go on to attack The Nightmare Family, ultimately sending Cody to the hospital. Cody would then make his return over a month later with a huge chip on his shoulder and taking out The Dark Order.
Brodie Lee would then issue a challenge to Cody: a Dog Collar Match. This is a match type we last saw over two decades ago when we saw the late Vader defeat the late British Bulldog, Davey Boy Smith, on an episode of WWE Monday Night RAW.
Mr. @ThisBrodieLee is absolutely destroying @CodyRhodes in this match!

The Dog Collar match itself has only taken place a number of times. The record books indicate that the first match took place back in 1979 between Johhny Boyd and Killer Brooks for Pacific Northwest Wrestling. The first televised match took place in 1983 when the late “Rowdy” Roddy Piper defeated Greg “The Hammer” Valentine, who was actually in attendance tonight on AEW Dynamite. The match itself took place only a couple of more times before tonight.
