Rey Mysterio: The Perfect Choice for AAA General Manager

Last year, WWE announced they acquired Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, former home of wrestlers like Penta, Rey Fenix, and Rey Mysterio. Many fans wondered how the company would handle such a legendary part of professional wrestling. But the doubters have been proven wrong many times.

There have been tons of crossover appearances by AAA wrestlers, such as El Hijo Del Vikingo in NXT and Mr. Iguana on the main roster. The same can be said for WWE wrestlers such as AAA Mega Champion Dominik Mysterio and the two El Grande Americanos, whose mask-vs.-mask match takes place on Saturday.

But one of the biggest benefits of the acquisition made itself known on the May 23, 2026, episode of AAA. After much speculation, Rey Mysterio was named the company’s General Manager. This decision will help both AAA wrestlers and the way the company is being run. Mysterio becoming the new General Manager will definitely make AAA more popular than it currently is.

Mysterio Deeply Respects AAA and Luchador Traditions

Many fans consider Mysterio as one of, if not the, best luchadors of all time. Starting his career in Mexico in 1989, he then moved on to ECW in 1995, then to WCW the next year, and WWE in 2002. With over 35 years of professional wrestling experience, he’s won a multitude of titles in Mexico and North America. He was inducted into the AAA Hall of Fame in 2007 and the WWE Hall of Fame in 2023, recognizing his immense influence over his career.

Many luchadors today, such as Dragon Lee, Fenix, and Penta, have credited him as an inspiration for becoming luchadors. WWE’s acquisition of AAA has allowed those wrestlers to compete in Mexico against AAA’s own luchadors under the WWE banner. Mysterio has been able to return to the company where his career started and give back to everyone. As General Manager, he’ll handle matters respectfully so the audience will definitely give their approval.

He’ll Be Able to Give Opportunities to Everyone

Even though Mysterio is the General Manager of AAA, he isn’t retired, nor is he out of his WWE contract. He’s still an active in-ring competitor, most recently defeating El Grande Americano on the April 27 Raw. That’s where he has an advantage as General Manager.

If he sees something backstage on Raw or knows someone from AAA wants a WWE chance, he’s readily available to talk to. We’ve seen Shawn Michaels grant Drake Morreaux a AAA opportunity recently, as well as Nick Aldis to Rey Fenix, so Mysterio will be in that position from now on.

In addition, with his own son as AAA Mega Champion, he can directly impact Dominik’s reign in ways that he won’t like. AAA wanted an active General Manager who can make matches on the fly during Raw, giving the brand more presence on main roster programming. Mysterio will increase AAA visibility while still being an active member of the Raw roster, something which will pay off greatly.

His Reign as AAA General Manager Will Be a Good One

The first night of Mysterio’s General Manager campaign couldn’t have gone any better. With the pivotal El Grande Americano match coming up on Saturday, there was one rule. The two Americanos couldn’t touch each other or Americano would have to unmask. But their hate was too strong as they brawled in the ring last Saturday. Mysterio could’ve thrown out the match, but instead insisted that it still happen, even though the rule was broken, to not disappoint the fans.

His love for AAA and the fans overruled what was in place before him, demonstrating how he wants the company to succeed. He could’ve made the easy decision, causing controversy and himself becoming a villain. But he’s extremely caring and understanding, wanting the best for AAA and WWE. This decision shows what kind of General Manager he will be. Mysterio will make informed and smart decisions that will benefit the wrestlers in AAA and the fans who tune in to watch the show.
