Before Night 1 of WrestleMania 41, WWE announced that it had purchased Lucha Libre AAA. Since that time, they’ve started a weekly show on Saturday nights and have had several PLE’s featuring both WWE talent, including current AAA Mega Champion Dominik Mysterio, El Grande Americano, and “The Original” El Grande Americano.
Some of the AAA talent, like El Hijo Del Vikingo, La Parka, Mr. Iguana, and Psycho Clown, have appeared on WWE PLE’s and weekly programming. In addition, a major free agent in La Catalina debuted with much fanfare a few weeks ago, getting fans excited. WWE wrestlers have benefited as well, such as Mysterio.
He has been a major player during many AAA broadcasts and has worn the AAA Mega Championship belt on WWE programming. Would his latest match as champion end with another retention, or would he lose the belt, ending a great reign?
Dominik Mysterio Retains after More El Grande Americano Chaos
Mysterio has definitely become popular with the AAA fans, but El Grande Americano and “The Original” Americano are much more important to their programming as of this moment. The two masked luchadors have taken their feud to a whole other level while in AAA. In America, things have been chaotic, but in Mexico, their all-out brawls have made their storyline extremely important. Their rivalry has become so heated that a mask vs. mask match was made. On May 30, 2026, at Noche de los Grandes, one of them will be unmasked.
“The Original” Americano wanted to get an extra leg up on Americano, which is why he challenged Mysterio for the AAA Mega Championship on the May 11 Raw. If he wins, that could change the match. It could still be mask vs. mask, but the AAA Mega Championship could be on the line.

Mysterio would have to fight extremely hard to win, especially after what happened earlier in the night. Finn Balor attacked JD McDonagh backstage, so Mysterio would have to fight alone. In addition, this is his first AAA Mega Championship defense outside of the company, so losing it on Raw would be embarrassing.
The match started with each man getting equal amounts of offense on the other. Americano shoved Mysterio in the corner, but got a boot to the face before any damage could be done. Mysterio got him up on the turnbuckle and started chopping him.
He extended his arm, causing the referee to break the hold. Then, he got him onto the edge of the apron, but couldn’t deliver the German suplex. He got elbowed and then kneed on his back, causing him to fly to the ground very painfully. He got back into the ring, tossed Mysterio into the turnbuckle, before a dragon suplex led to an unsuccessful pin.
But before he could do anything else, some old enemies arrived. Bravo and Rayo Americano caused a huge distraction for the referee, followed by El Grande Americano hitting him on the head. Mysterio delivered a Tornado DDT but couldn’t get the cover. Bruto and Julio Creed arrived and started a fight with Bravo and Rayo.
“The Original” Americano tried to get Mysterio into an ankle lock, but was again distracted by Americano. He tried to unmask Americano before their match, but that wasn’t a good idea.
Mysterio connected with the 619, then delivered the frog splash for the match victory and retention of the AAA Mega Championship. For him, he gets to keep the championship another day.

Surely, AAA talent were watching, eagerly anticipating his return to their programming so his next challenger could be determined. But for “The Original” Americano, he not only lost, but was antagonized even more by Americano ahead of their mask vs. mask match. He might be mad now, but that’ll give him more motivation to win their match between them.
