NXT GM Ava Announces New Men’s WWE Speed Championship Tournament

WWE NXT GM Ava has finally revealed the details surrounding a new men’s WWE Speed Championship tournament. Speaking during this week’s episode of NXT, she confirmed that a new men’s tournament will follow hot on the heels of the success of the latest women’s tournament. The men’s tournament, the first to take place since the title’s rebrand, will begin on next week’s episode of NXT.

Ava has confirmed the tournament’s two opening round matches. SmackDown’s Axiom will take on Evolve’s Sean Legacy. In the second confirmed match, LFG Season 1 winner and NXT star Jasper Troy will face TNA’s Zachary Wentz. The winner of the tournament will be rewarded with a title shot against the current champion, El Grande Americano.

A New Era Begins for the Men’s WWE Speed Championship

Americano has been the WWE Speed Champion for just over five months. However, unlike women’s champion Sol Ruca, Americano has not been seen on WWE programming with the championship on his person. This, despite the fact that Americano has appeared regularly on WWE Raw and in AAA since WWE acquired the Mexico-based promotion.

WWE Speed Championship matches were previously broadcast on Wednesdays, exclusively on X. After a brief hiatus, WWE announced that the titles would now be defended on the NXT brand. WWE has extended challenges and tournament entries for the titles to both TNA and AAA personnel.

Last month, the first tournament since the title’s migration to NXT took place, concluding with a title match at NXT No Mercy. The tournament saw SmackDown’s Candice LeRae, NXT’s Lainey Reid, AAA’s Faby Apache, and TNA’s Xia Brookside compete for a shot at champion Sol Ruca. Reid won the initial tournament but withdrew due to injury, leading to Jaida Parker replacing her in the final. After interference from her rival, Lash Legend, Ruca landed the Sol Snatcher to retain. Her reign is fast closing in on the 200-day mark.
