Another HUGE Title Match Added to SummerSlam Card

AJ Styles, fresh off his phenomenal return to TNA Wrestling this weekend, has spent the last two weeks doing his best cosplay. This week, he donned the outfits of a valet, janitor, and finally a WWE official, all in the hopes of getting his Intercontinental Championship match against Dominik Mysterio at SummerSlam. Styles (along with Becky Lynch) crashed the end of a pretty chaotic women’s tag team championship match to go after Mysterio, who had earlier ducked getting a medical evaluation.

Following the match, Adam Pearce cornered Mysterio backstage and told him either he vacate the title or get evaluated immediately. Mysterio followed Pearce to the back as the night’s developing story continued. Close to the end of the show, Mysterio got his results. As the doctor was explaining he was finishing up the paperwork, Dominik Mysterio attacked AJ Styles. He told Styles and Pearce he was cleared and that he’d see him at SummerSlam.

Could Dominik Mysterio Be The Next WWE Intercontinental Champion?

Dominik Mysterio, now embarking on his 20th year in the business, has been a wily champion while wrestling three title matches in just over 90 days. He’s kept his month of July clear from in-ring action nursing an undisclosed injury. It was all a ruse to push Styles off but Styles wasn’t going to go down without a fight. After securing the No. 1 contendership, Styles has been not-so-patiently waiting for his match that was originally scheduled for Night of Champions. Should AJ Styles win at SummerSlam, it will mark the 25+ year vet’s first title in four years. This is the longest such drought of Styles’ career without holding some kind of championship gold. Mysterio meanwhile, heads to SummerSlam, marking the 20th anniversary of his storyline debut and five year anniversary of his in-ring debut.
