Preview: AEW Dark: Elevation Card (08/22/22) – Maki Itoh Returns

Elevation Card - Women's Tag Graphic

It’s time for AEW Dark Elevation, and with nine matches set, this is indeed a loaded offering. In trios action, Death Triangle looks to build momentum in hopes of becoming the first AEW Trios Champions. Still, before their big match against Will Ospreay and Aussie Open in the opening round, they’ll have to get by Rosario Grillo, Dean Alexander, and Manscout. Next, Anna Jay A.S. looks to make it three in a row since joining the Jericho Appreciation Society and two in a row since adding the A.S. to her name as she faces Nikki Victory. Our focus will be on tag team action as Hikaru Shida and Skye Blue face off with Emi Sakura and the returning Maki Itoh. Let’s take a look at the Dark Elevation card.

Hikaru Shida and Skye Bule vs. Emi Sakura and Maki Itoh

Hikaru Shida is on a tear and has been undefeated inside of an AEW ring since losing to Serena Deeb in a Philadelphia Street Fight back in April. She looks to keep that going as she teams up with Skye Blue against Emi Sakura and Maki Itoh.

While Sakura and Itoh are both very talented competitors, I have a hard time seeing them pick up the win here. As mentioned earlier, Shida’s on a fantastic run of late, and it’s tough to see her losing here. However, there is one glaring x-factor: Skye’s record against Emi.

The two have battled many times, mostly in trios and tag team matches. While Blue does have a few wins over Emi in trios action, she has still yet to pick up a win over her in tag-team action. Throw in the hunger Itoh will surely have to impress in her return, and they have a solid chance.

As I mentioned earlier, I still have a hard time seeing that happen. I always tend to favor those with momentum, and Shida has enough of that for her and Skye. This will be a tremendous match given the talent involved and just further shows this is a can’t-miss episode, so tune in!
