AJ Lee v Becky Lynch (Women’s Intercontinental Championship Match) (2.75/5)
AJ Lee has Lynch’s number headed into this match. Lee had tapped The Man out three times, and it looked to be headed that way again. There was some great back-and-forth wrestling here, but A.J. Lee would consistently end up on top. It was in line with how their story had progressed, so it made sense in terms of the match’s pacing.
Each time these two have stepped into the ring, the match’s quality has improved, and this one is the best so far. We saw some great wrestling and creative counters.
The ongoing drama between Becky Lynch and referee Jessika Carr took the focus away from the action. WWE needs to figure out just where they are going with this angle, because drawing it out makes no sense for anyone.
The finish seemed to come out of nowhere. It was not what one would call a definitive ending, so we can expect these two to meet again. Sadly, this was a great match that failed to get out of first gear, which isn’t what we have come to expect from WrestleMania matches.
Seth Rollins v Gunther (4/5)
If the past two weeks were about sowing the seeds of hatred between these two men, then this match saw those seeds grow. This was a fantastic match between two of the best WWE wrestlers of the past decade. Seth Rollins and Gunther are great technical wrestlers, so the expectation was that we should see some great wrestling; in fact, we didn’t. What we saw was an all-out fight featuring the stiffest shots this side of the Grand Canyon.
There was nothing but high-impact with massive clotheslines, boots, and powerbombs. There was nothing fancy about what was being done in the ring, just two men who were hell-bent on proving that they were the best.
The numerous false finishes and big boy curb stomp on the announcer’s table were a great lead-up towards the finish. The run-in by Breakker was telegraphed but necessary to get things back on track between Seth Rollins and his former Vision mate. It gives Gunther a victory at WrestleMania and sets up a potential showdown with a Beast down the road.
