The December 17, 2024, episode of WWE NXT ended with Trick Williams retaining the NXT championship against Eddy Thorpe. However, there was some controversy surrounding the victory.
A double ref count occurred, igniting confusion around the arena. Williams was declared the winner, but since Thorpe had his foot under the rope, he thought he won the match.
The next week, he came out during a faceoff between Williams and Oba Femi, who won the Iron Survivor Challenge. The match was already set for WWE NXT New Year’s Evil between Williams and Femi, but he couldn’t shake the loss.
After some tense deliberation, Ava granted Williams a Triple Threat match between the three men.
Thorpe has his rematch, but now it involves Femi. Will this give Thorpe more motivation to win, or did he guarantee himself a loss?
Eddy Thorpe Now Has More Fire Burning Inside
When Trick Williams was announced as the winner, Eddy Thorpe was furious. He thought the NXT Championship should’ve been rightfully his. Given his attitude on Tuesday, there was no way he was leaving the arena without his rematch.
He got it, but with Femi added. With two obstacles now in the way, some wrestlers would’ve been having second thoughts. But when you chase a championship, a harder challenge can make you more determined to win.
It doesn’t matter if it’s a gimmick match or a match with multiple people involved; if you have the focus and drive to win, you can achieve your goals. He doesn’t care how many people are in the match; he just wants the title that he thinks he deserves.
Beating two people is more impressive than one, and Eddy Thorpe is definitely using that as motivation during his title match at New Year’s Evil.
The Match Type Could Be Thorpe’s Undoing
Being in a Triple Threat Match is hard enough, given that you don’t have to get pinned for the match to end. However, being in one with a two-time NXT Champion and a former NXT North American Champion is an entirely different story. Given how strong Williams and Femi are, there’s no telling what they’re going to do to Thorpe.
There’s a chance he could fight to the end of the match, showing why he deserves to be there. But there’s also the possibility that one of them can take him out early, basically making it a regular one-on-one match.
When a Triple Threat Match takes place, there are no guarantees that all three people are going to be participating the whole time or have equal amounts of offense. If Eddy Thorpe isn’t careful, he could be watching his title aspirations slip away very easily.
New Year’s Evil Will Determine If He Did the Right Thing
There are multiple storylines culminating in the Triple Threat Match for the NXT Championship at WWE NXT: New Year’s Evil. Trick Williams kept his championship, Oba Femi won the Iron Survivor Challenge, and Eddy Thorpe got what he thought was rightfully his.
Thorpe could’ve waited until afterward to challenge the winner, but he wasn’t going to wait that long. His impatience and rage led to the creation of this match. By inserting himself into something that didn’t involve him, he angered Femi and Williams easily.
He’s at a huge disadvantage both in terms of size and skill, but his emotions could lead him to victory. If he can figure out how to outsmart both men, the NXT Championship will be his. But if he loses, he might have some second thoughts about his actions that lead to the creation of the match.
