WWE WrestleMania 40 Losses Paves Way For Summer of McIntyre & Gunther

A photo of Gunther losing at WWE WrestleMania XL.

The main events for two of WWE’s biggest shows of the year seem to have been set when Gunther and Drew McIntyre both lost at WrestleMania 40.

These defeats will pave the way for Gunther and McIntyre to spend the spring/ summer months building toward homecoming appearances.

Gunther and McIntyre have become two of the biggest stars on WWE Raw and their popularity will be at an all-time high when WWE hosts multiple PLEs in Europe, this summer. They will strive for redemption at two massive shows in Scotland and Germany.

Gunther & McIntyre: European Homecoming

Drew McIntyre Finally Gets Scottish Show

Clash At The Castle will take place in Drew McIntyre’s homeland Scotland.

Many anticipated McIntyre would play a prominent role in the PLE but the nature of his loss at WrestleMania 40 has all but guaranteed the June 15, 2024 show at the OVO Hydro, Glasgow will be the setting for McIntyre’s redemption story. Or a heartbreaking goodbye.

McIntyre won the World Heavyweight Championship from Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 40. This completed a story arch for the Scot who had craved for years to win a championship at WrestleMania in front of fans.

Since January, McIntyre has carried a feud with CM Punk on his own. McIntyre also delivered some of his best heel work in the build to his match at WrestleMania 40 with Rollins.

McIntyre famously last won a top WWE championship at the empty Performance Center during the COVID WrestleMania 36.

But his victory over Seth Rollins at the weekend was short-lived. Damian Priest cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase to take the title off McIntyre.

WWE now has two months to build towards McIntyre earning a rematch against the World Heavyweight Champion Priest. Backlash France will take place first and could offer McIntyre an initial shot at the championship.

McIntyre’s Contract Extended

There have been rumors McIntyre’s time with WWE could soon be over as his contract expires this year. McIntyre claimed he would leave WWE if he didn’t defeat Rollins. According to Forbes, McIntyre’s contract has been extended for the next few months due to inactive time accrued during injury.

All this points to McIntyre finally winning gold in Glasgow, or bowing out in front of his fellow Scots. WWE’s other Scottish stars include Alba Fyre, Isla Dawn, Piper Niven, Nikki Cross, Joe Coffey, Mark Coffey, Wolfgang and Noam Dar. Fyre and Dawn are the most likely to join McIntrye on the card for Clash At The Castle.

Gunther To Bash In Berlin

We all knew when Gunther’s record-breaking Intercontinental Championship run came to an end, he would step up to challenge for a bigger WWE title. The reign ended at 666 days at the hands of Sami Zayn at WrestleMania 40.

Now, WWE has five months to prepare Gunther for an epic challenge at Bash In Berlin, Germany on August 31, 2024.

Born in Austria, Gunther moved to Germany to focus on his wrestling career for Westside Xtreme Wrestling. Gunther has previously admitted feeling excited about the Bash In Berlin show taking place in the country he called home for a decade.

He became a legend for WxW and will be greeted with a rapturous welcome in Berlin.

A match with McIntyre for the World Heavyweight Championship would be a fantastic celebration of two of the greatest European stars to make it in WWE. But WWE could give Gunther an opportunity against its biggest star Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed Universal Championship.

Either way, it is highly unlikely the main event of Bash In Berlin will not feature Gunther challenging for a major championship.
