Maki Itoh Revealed as Joker Entrant in AEW Owen Hart Foundation Women’s Tournament

Maki Itoh Owen Hart

On this week’s special Wild Card Wednesday edition of AEW Dynamite, Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D. competed in her quarterfinal match in the Owen Hart Foundation Women’s Tournament. However, “The Doctor” entered this match unable to effectively prepare, as she was set to face the women’s tournament “Joker” entrant. Rumors circulated as to who would be slotted into this role. After much speculation, it was revealed that the Joker was none other than Maki Itoh, who stepped up to the former AEW Women’s World Champion in the Owen Hart Foundation Women’s Tournament. This match marks Itoh’s first All Elite Wrestling appearance since March 2021, previously competing on Dynamite in a six-woman tag team alongside Baker and Nyla Rose in a losing effort against Hikaru Shida, Ryo Mizunami, and current women’s titleholder Thunder Rosa.

What to Know About Women’s Tournament Joker Entrant

Known primarily for her work in Tokyo Joshi Pro-Wrestling, Maki Itoh is one of the most recognizable figures in not only the company but Joshi Puroresu as a whole. She is the current International Princess Champion in her second reign, having defeated Hikari Noa at TJPW’s Tokyo Joshi Pro ’22 event. The 2021 Tokyo Princess Cup winner picked up mainstream popularity largely due to her charisma. She first appeared for AEW in last year’s Women’s World Championship Eliminator Tournament, where she fell to Ryo Mizunami in the first round. Despite this, Itoh made multiple AEW appearances since then, even being a surprise competitor in the Revolution 2021 Buy-In this past March.
