#AndNEW: Sammy Guevara Wins Interim TNT Championship at AEW Battle of the Belts

Sammy Guevara AEW

“The Spanish God” is once again being recognized as TNT Champion. Sammy Guevara defeated Dustin Rhodes in a match for the interim TNT Championship at the first-ever AEW Battle of the Belts event on Saturday night. The interim tag was thrown in as it was initially set to be Guevara getting his rematch against current TNT Champion Cody Rhodes, however, it was announced Friday on AEW Rampage that Cody was unable to compete due to medical protocol. Guevara was able to pull out the win when, in the midst of an exchange of pin attempts, he caught Dustin with a surprise three-count.

Sammy Guevara Becomes the Interim TNT Champion

Dustin Rhodes was a fitting fill-in outside of just being Cody’s brother. Since his last TNT Championship challenge against Brodie Lee in 2020, Rhodes went 7-2 and had an overall record of 15-3. Add in his veteran prowess and ties to the current TNT Champion and it proved to be the perfect fit.

The interim TNT Championship victory of Sammy Guevara sets him up to still get that rematch with Rhodes down the line which is exactly what he wants. When Rhodes defeated Guevara on the Holiday Bash episode of Rampage, it was a bit of a shocker seeing that Guevara had defeated Miro to win the championship before having a short run that was ended suddenly.

The rematch should be in the coming weeks as there will only be one TNT Champion at the end of this struggle between “The American Nightmare” and “The Spanish God.”
